100-Word Challenge, Day 199-201

A chime announced a visitor outside, so Aldric locked his data slate and said, “Come in.” There were a dozen men outside his door and a hundred more in and around the medical facility itself. If an assassin made it far enough to ring his door, then he deserved to come inside at least.

The door slid open and Isaac Yamato stepped into the room. “My apologies, sir, but you said you wanted to know as soon as Doctor Murray’s fate was known.” He walked across the room and sat in the chair that had been his traditional perch since Aldric had woken. “He met a rather tragic end when the habitation unit he was living in suffered a tragic accident. Apparently a micro-meteor smashed through a window. He was killed along with thirty others in the resulting decompression.” A crooked smile reached half of his thin lipped mouth. “Of course that is what the official reports will read.”

“Are you sure all traces of the attack have been taken care of?” Aaldric asked. “It would not do to have this traced back to us.”

“Even if the constables manage to send someone we don’t own, there is not enough evidence remaining to lead anyone to a conclusion beyond what we have manufactured.”

“Good,” Aldric poured himself a glass of fresh water and took a long drink. He knew Isaac watched him and hoped to be allowed a drink, but Aldric was not in a giving mood. “With Evan out of the way, they won’t be able to use him to keep the Void System running once they run out of his stored blood, and I plan on reducing what they have on hand even further." A quick look at the time confirmed that as he was speaking a pair of assault teams was breaking into the hospital Evan had recovered in and a government lab that was trying to clone the man. "Soon they will be knocking on my door once more to make sure I can keep them safe."
