As a fan of the first book, I was excited to read the second one. While Justin makes several appearances in this book, he takes a backseat to a man named Kohaku Hitaratsu. He’s a business man who built his name by being an unethical criminal. One day, his entire empire comes crashing down and Kohaku must find a way to rebuild his life with nothing.

The most interesting thing about this book is that Kohaku is not really a very likeable character when we meet him. He does things he shouldn’t do and I found myself enjoying seeing him taken down a peg. By the end of the book, I came to have an entirely different perspective on him.

As with the first book, Swett packs each page with characters and situations that inspire emotion in the reader. While it may not all be positive emotions, it makes the reader feel, and that’s important. There is plenty of action and some entertaining moments that serve to move the characters forward on their journey. I loved this story and can’t wait to see how the other books play out.

This is a great example of apocalyptic urban fantasy

The sequel improves on the first book, in that a lot more starts to fall into place: including the direction of the next book(s). This is a great example of apocalyptic urban fantasy, with great characters and even better villains. Looking forward to the next installment!
